Main South Road / Victor Harbor Road Junction Concept Study

HDS Australia was engaged by Transport SA to conduct a concept study into the junction of Victor Harbor Road with Main South Road at Old Noarlunga. The study was commissioned to improve the operation of the junction due to community concerns about traffic delays at the intersection.

The study was undertaken in three stages:

  • Stage 1 examined the long term development of Main South Road to cater for predicted traffic demands.
  • Stage 2 examined the short and medium term improvements to the junction that are compatible with long term development of Main South Road.
  • Stage 3 expanded upon the preferred medium and long term development options and examined the viability of the improvement works.

To successfully undertake the study, HDS Australia utilised a range of skills including strategic planning, stakeholder consultation, traffic and accident data analysis, pavement analysis, environmental issues, heritage and indigenous issues, road and traffic design, and cost estimation.

Improvement options included:

  1. Widening the DV Fleming Bridge or building a new bridge over the Onkaparinga River to satisfy future traffic demands;
  2. Staged improvement options for the Victor Harbor Road junction and Seaford Road intersection; and
  3. Building an overpass to reduce traffic delays at the Main South Road / Victor Harbor Road Junction.
